Dane Architectural Systems – Hamsterley Factory Extension
Dane Group has been established for over 50 years and specialises in the design, fabrication and installation of both aluminium glazing systems and mild steel staircases and balustrading. The site in Hamsterley, Newcastle upon Tyne comprises manufacturing floor space of 60,000 sq. ft between aluminium and steel (mild and stainless) fabrication workshops.
Their fabrication operations have evolved over the years to meet the demands of modern architecture and building standards and the factory required an extension to keep up with this evolution.
One of the challenges of this particular project was that existing operations remained live throughout the duration of the works which required phasing and operational considerations and strict planning and programming to ensure the safety of all site users during the works.
Scope of works
The contracted works included demolishing some existing single storey workshops and office accommodation to make way for an extension to the adjacent fabrication shop. The existing overhead gantry crane was also extended into the new extension. The extension was approximately 6000sq. ft. The new extension comprises a steel portal framed building, with simple pad foundations and a ground bearing slab.
The scope of works included:
- Demolition
- Mine grouting
- Excavation
- Concrete Foundations
- Retaining Wall
- Structural Steel
- Roof and Wall Cladding
- Welfare and Office facilities
- Drainage
- Hard landscaping
