Lingey Lane to Felling By-Pass Quality Transport Corridor – Gateshead Council LES

BCE Northern was engaged by Gateshead LES to construct a 110 lin m length of reinforced concrete retaining wall as part of a Major Roadworks Improvement Scheme to the A184 Felling Bypass between November 2012 and March 2013.

The Contract was let under the NEC Short Subcontract Option B with Bills of Quantities.

The widening of the A184 Felling Bypass was part of a half a million pound project to improve traffic flow at this important junction.

Our scope of work involved the insitu construction of a 110 lin m length of reinforced concrete retaining wall within the traffic management closure of the busy A184.

Access to site was via a pre-planned traffic management single lane and slip road closure, with imposed restrictions on lane width, safety zone, access points and site speed limits as a requirement for Highway Works and specified within the contract.

Our operations ran concurrently with other site contractors within a narrow working zone and management and planning of daily site operations and movements was an important consideration.

Due to the nature of the locations of the works, our concrete pours were facilitated via concrete pumps and phased to suit the traffic management temporary closures.

The work was scheduled to take 18 weeks and despite some difficult weather conditions, the project was completed 3 weeks ahead of time.

Our organisation continues to work alongside Gateshead Council on their Highways projects.
